Our Commitment to Sustainability

At The Proper Marmalade Company Ltd, we believe that making great marmalade should go hand in hand with making thoughtful choices about the materials we use and the impact of our business.

We continually look for ways to reduce waste, choose responsible materials and work with suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability.

Glass jars and aluminium lids

Our marmalade is packaged in glass jars with aluminium lids. Glass is a durable, widely recyclable packaging material, and our glass packaging is supplied by Pattesons Glass, whose preserve jar range includes products made using recycled glass. Glass manufacturing can incorporate recycled glass (cullet), helping to reduce the energy required in production.

The jars and aluminium lids are also designed with recycling in mind, allowing customers to recycle the packaging after enjoying our marmalade, in accordance with their local recycling facilities.

Responsible cardboard packaging

Our cardboard packaging is supplied by RH Fibreboard, a company with a strong focus on responsible and recyclable packaging.

RH Fibreboard holds FSC® Chain of Custody certification and promotes the use of responsibly sourced and recycled materials. The company states that its cardboard products are 100% recyclable, biodegradable and suitable for composting, with around 80–85% of its production made from recycled material.

By choosing cardboard packaging from a supplier with these credentials, we aim to minimise our reliance on less recyclable packaging materials while supporting responsible forestry and recycling practices.

FSC®-certified paper

Our business cards are printed using FSC®-certified paper. The Forest Stewardship Council® certification system helps ensure that paper and other forest-based materials come from responsibly managed sources, with certified materials tracked through the supply chain.

We choose FSC-certified paper as a small but meaningful step towards more responsible sourcing across our business.

Always improving

We know that sustainability is an ongoing journey rather than a destination. As a small food business, we are continually reviewing our packaging, materials and suppliers to find practical ways to reduce waste and lessen our environmental impact.

We will continue to make considered choices about the materials we use and work with suppliers who share our ambition to operate more responsibly.
